How was your week?
Mine was good, and busy, but I didn't miss a day on Threads. That's been my online hangout spot lately so in this edition of #CareerConvos™️ I'll recap some of the introverted socializing I did over there.
If you're poking around Threads wondering if it's worth your time, connect with me while you're there.
I had a random thought about money that resonated with a lot of entrepreneurs: "All money ain't good money."
Then, based on a question I got about career development on LinkedIn, a thread about personal branding:
An epiphany and reminder at the same time: Show the world your dopeness and the money and opportunities that are for you will find you.
I find that the most satisfying projects and clients are the ones who saw something I wrote or loved something on my website and reached out. I'm not a fan of forcing things - relationships, jobs, clients. If it has to be forced, I don't want it.
#CareerConvos™️: Working in Public Accounting vs. Industry
My accounting career is all industry experience. I had absolutely no desire to work in public accounting, and that's mainly because of the stigma around public accounting careers - being overworked and stressed out isn't something I'd ever be interested in.
For a hot minute, I thought I was missing out on something professionally by choosing to avoid public accounting. Then I (1) reminded myself who TF I was and (2) realized the golden years of growing up professionally in the accounting industry happened at the best company in the world at that time, GE.
This was on my heart, and I let it out on Episode 54 of Career Convos with Nikki. I planned to write notes and record the episode later but the universe said do it now.
Here's the link to listen, then let me know your thoughts, either comment here or send me a note.
If you're an accounting professional reflecting on where you been and wondering what's next, I highly recommend you tune in to Episode 54 of Career Convos with Nikki.
In these Accounting Streets
I was recently asked how I stay updated with what's happening in the accounting industry. First, I read. Second, through networking, I hear different perspectives from peers working in their own firms or for companies about what's they're seeing. Third, I research. If I read an article in WSJ about another accounting firm being acquired by a private equity company, I'll look up guidance for the deal and make a mental note of how it's supposed to look in the financials.
There's always something going on in these accounting streets. Make sure you keep your skills and knowledge sharp by making time to learn.
Lots of people are asking for the replay link of The Best Way to Study for the FAR Exam. If that's you, here it is again:
Mommy Moment: I'm TIRED
Another Thread as the overwhelm started to sink in. My kids are older so the school supply lists are simpler - no crayons and Fiskars and all that but DAMN! Everything else they want that they expect to get so effortlessly.
I had a chat earlier this week in the Ellevate Black Women's Circle about enforcing boundaries with my kids. I'm excited for them to go back to school and the work to get them out of summer mode and back into a routine and homework time and all that... I won't let it raise my blood pressure.
In fact, I dropped everything one day and went and got lost in the Atlanta Botanical Garden. It was the escape I needed for a few hours just to soothe my chakras. I wrote a Supercharged Self-Care blog post about it, click below to read:
How do you prioritize joy? Outside of work and what's going on at home, what makes you happy?
Music is Love
That's You by Lucky Daye will forever live rent-free in my head. I love the song so much I'm going to make a 3-hour drive to hear him sing it live. I'm also loving Agnez Mo's song called Patience. It's my kinda vibe and soon as I find out she's going on tour, I'm going to be in the building for that song.
Cooking Videos
I have a bunch of cooking videos in my phone that I need to publish to the Foodgasms blog. It's important but not urgent so I'll get to it eventually. In the meantime, enjoy the cooking videos I've uploaded so far.
That's it for now, come back in a couple weeks for a new edition of the #CareerConvos newsletter. Until then, comment and share this with someone who needs it.
